For 130 years Absorene has been focused on providing clients with the specific products needed for jobs across the world. Our customer support has been a highlight to our clients because we are a small company doing big jobs. We have always shown full support to our customers by being there for problem solving and question answering. Our focus at Absorene changes with the demands of our customers. For the past 30 years our focus has been in specializing in dry cleaning and biodegradable cellulose sponge.
The demand for compressed cellulose has been steadily rising in the past 10 years. Due to the current demand, Absorene has updated technology and equipment to do the job needed to cut custom shapes and sizes that supports the demands of our clients. We offer the ability for customers to request nearly any shape or size to be cut out of our compressed sponge. Each product we offer can be used for many purposes while also being available in various colors.
Our employees start our sponge producing process by using heavy machinery to slice our dry cleaning or cellulose sponge into custom sized rectangles. Once each sponge is cut into the exact size needed, the next step is to wrap the sponge in plastic. The reason we use plastic to wrap the sponge is to ensure we are keeping any moisture or dust from collecting around the sponge. Each sponge is then hand placed onto a roller system sending it into an automatic sealer for each sponge to be individually wrapped with clear plastic. Or we use a black plastic bag kept inside a box and hand load each sponge. Each method is used to ensure every sponge meets our standards. Each sponge is then loaded into a box by hand and sealed.
Our compressed sponge is cut into various shapes and sizes in a much different process than our expanded cellulose or dry cleaning sponges. We offer the ability to cut any custom shape requested by our customer in various colors. Absorene has many standard shapes cut regularly, but also give the ability for customers to provide custom shapes. The process is started by taking the artwork provided from customer and digitizing it to our machine format that cuts them into the shapes.
Absorene Manufacturing Company has been making the wallpaper cleaner that bears its name. Absorene wallpaper cleaner is a pink putty-like material that picks up dirt and absorbs it without streaking, crumbling, or ever wetting the wall surface. Like modeling clay it can be shaped to fit in all those little corners and niches that attract dust and dirt. It earned the title . Pink Ball of Magic. for its easy and effective method of cleaning.
The company was founded in St. Louis by H.R. Henderson and in 1900 the business moved into a factory that previously housed the Mullanphy Emigrant Home. During the early part of the century the Absorene business grew by adding new cleaning products and expanding sales across the country. By the mid 1940s Absorene was the largest manufacturer of wallpaper cleaner in the U.S.
In 1954 the company was purchased by Harry Shear and he extended the product line to include children.s modeling dough made and packaged for many national accounts under private label.
Ralph W. Coldewe, Jr. acquired the Absorene Company in 1976 and greatly expanded the business. In 1989 Absorene acquired Sponge Producers Co., a converter of cellulose and synthetic sponges. And in 1998 the Gulf & West Indies Co., importer of natural sponges, became part of the Absorene Company. Today Absorene remains the premier cleaner for wallpaper, books, paper products, and art work. Our product line covers the full range of natural and synthetic sponges for industrial cleaning, cosmetic application, cleansing sponges, and bath accessories.
